There’s something magical about learning how to swear in a different language. Just ask France-based producer French Fries, who’s last three major releases have been bringing “bitch” back. It’s become almost as big a part of his signature sound as the sparse club vibe and thudding 808 kicks that have come to define his tracks. I get the sense that there’s something tongue and cheek about it though. It’s not so much the misogynistic ’bitches’ that has dominated hip hop over the last decade, but a kind of gender neutral, “fuck off” kind of bitch. It almost seems to mock the high-end club vibe through it’s own vision of a more techy, underground club sound.
Maybe that’s just me. Either way, French Fries has made some huge tunes this year and has done a lot to generate buzz for the Clek Clek Boom label. The label’s weekly podcast has featured big names from the bass house scene including Claude Von Stroke, Toddla T, and Scratcha DVA, and with only four releases under their belt, they look to have a bright future ahead of them. “What To Do” was originally going to be a vinyl only release, but you can catch a limited digital release on Clek Clek Boom’s website.
