Kyogi – You Were (Honest Remix)

Lyrically and sonically, “You Were” is elegant and romantic. The song’s musical elements can be attributed to the Future Garage movement, while its romantic subject matter seems to pay homage to R&B slow jams. Evoking hints of nostalgia, it delves into dynamics of love. Young love, first love, and/or a current love–wherever stage love is in your life—the song effectively captures the emotions attributed to affection.

When asked about his influences for this song, Honest said, ā€œI made the track in a day with a vibe. I have been seeing this girl, and I sat down after an awesome night with her and did the track running on a couple hours of sleep and a hangover. I didn’t really mind though. I was possessed.ā€

Interestingly and uniquely enough, this song is a remix. However, the original version has never been released. A YouTube search resulted in only one other version—a short take by the original artist that was never completed. According to Honest, ā€œHe [Kyogi] posted his track about a month ago on the Future Garage Forums, and I was very excited to see the track develop. Unfortunately, Kyogi’s project file got corrupted and he was unable to finish the track. He was kind enough to give me bits of it and here is what I did.ā€

Honest broke on to the scene after hearing “Archangel” by Burial. ā€œI’d say finding ‘Archangel’ by Burial was a turning point for me. It allowed my brain to breathe and interpret the feelings of the track on my own.ā€ When asked about his name, Honest had this to say: ā€œI like the name HONEST because that’s exactly what music is. You do not have to show any restraint. You can be 100% honest.ā€
