“Bend ya” is a prime example of why some ideas are best left in one’s own mind.
Just as two wrongs don’t make a right, two great artists can’t fix a poorly optimized beat and carry an even worse rapper. A track like this is right up Mann‘s alley, but does little more than degrade the efforts of his fellow trackmates. Frank Ocean possesses a powerful and soulful voice that was wasted on an instrumental with poor sound balance and tasteless voice modulation. Kendrick Lamar‘s uniquely syncopated and lightning fast flow is not done any justice by a beat that fails to accentuate his rhyming style with the hard hitting percussion we are accustomed to hearing in Kendrick songs.
As a fan of both Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar, it’s painful to see their talents go to waste. I’d love to see Ocean and Lamar collaborate again on a beat worthy of their talent. This track did not impress me, but please feel free to weigh in with your own opinions; we’d love to hear them.
